{"id":729,"date":"2014-07-23T00:01:41","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T05:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/?p=729"},"modified":"2014-07-23T09:06:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T14:06:14","slug":"premature-exits-of-childrens-lit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/?p=729","title":{"rendered":"Premature Exits of Children&#8217;s Lit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[This is one of a series of posts in which we are sharing stories from our upcoming book (<\/em>Wild Things: Acts of Mischief in Children&#8217;s Literature<em>) that were cut from the original manuscript.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just the other day, we took a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/?p=191\">the precocious ones<\/a> of children&#8217;s literature, those who started writing at a very young age. But what about those who left the field early &#8212; and, in some cases,\u00a0<em>suddenly<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>At one point during our research for this book, we asked authors: <em>What would it take, if anything, to drive you away from this field?\u00a0<\/em>The answers ranged from jaded (the dozens of acquisitions meetings required to publish a book today, financial security, the challenges of writing in the digital age) to light-hearted\u00a0(senile dementia, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy making me a better offer) to earnest (having no stories left for young readers). One author-illustrator told us she <em>needs<\/em> to make stories\u00a0for her own happiness. Publishers might not publish them, she said, but I would still make them.<\/p>\n<p>But today we look at four instances of more unusual early departures.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, Lois Duncan doesn\u2019t <em>quite<\/em> fit in. And that\u2019s because she isn\u2019t someone whose writing career is over, per se. But Duncan, who entered the field at a young age and would later win the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement, had her reasons for putting an end to the fictional suspense writing for which she was best-known and highly praised. In fact, there was a recent (May 2014)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/timstelloh\/who-killed-lois-duncan-s-daughter\"> BuzzFeed piece<\/a> about Duncan&#8217;s story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/510632.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-744 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/510632.jpg\" alt=\"510632\" width=\"283\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/510632.jpg 283w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/510632-178x300.jpg 178w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a>Duncan earned great fame and success with her young adult suspense novels, such as <em>Down a Dark Hall<\/em> (1974), <em>Summer of Fear<\/em> (1976), <em>Stranger with My Face<\/em> (1981), and <em>Killing Mr. Griffin<\/em> (1978), the latter considered a groundbreaking, taboo-shattering book. However, Duncan quit writing suspense books at the top of her game after her youngest daughter was murdered. Several strange coincidences existed between events surrounding her daughter&#8217;s death and scenes in the last book they worked on together, <em>Don\u2019t Look Behind You<\/em>, as discussed in Duncan\u2019s memoir, <em>Who Killed My Daughter?<\/em>\u00a0It was at this time she vowed to never write a YA suspense novel again (the one exception being the title <em>Gallow\u2019s Hill<\/em>, published in 1997).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy value system changed,\u201d Lois told us. \u201cMy desire to write to entertain was replaced by a driving need to use my writing skills in order to uncover the identity of\u00a0my own child&#8217;s killers, the motive behind her murder, and the motive certain police officers had for covering it up. &#8230; circumstances forced me to write using the left side of my brain, when the right side had previously been dominant.\u00a0I&#8217;m still able to switch back to the right side if I choose to, as I did when I wrote <em>News for Dogs<\/em> and <em>Movie for Dogs<\/em>, the two sequels to <em>Hotel for Dogs<\/em>.\u00a0But the non-fiction work I&#8217;m doing now seems more important.\u00a0I&#8217;m at a point in life where I have to sort out my priorities &#8212; I no longer have an endless stretch of time in front of me. {And} my focus is concentrated on real life horror rather than fictional game-playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/41j7EWlySKL._SL500_SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-781 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/41j7EWlySKL._SL500_SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg\" alt=\"41j7EWlySKL._SL500_SY344_BO1,204,203,200_\" width=\"239\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/41j7EWlySKL._SL500_SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg 239w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/41j7EWlySKL._SL500_SY344_BO1204203200_-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a>Then there\u2019s the case of Lynn Hall. Mention her name today and you may hear: \u201cLynn Hall? I always loved her books. Whatever happened to her?\u201d Hall penned nearly a hundred books for children of all ages and teens, including <em>Sticks and Stones<\/em>, one of the first young adult novels to address the subject of homosexuality, and <em>The Leaving<\/em>, winner of the 1981 Boston-Globe Horn Book Award for fiction. Hall was both a critical and popular success, primarily writing books that depicted animals in an unsentimental style. For twenty years, Hall published an amazing two to four books a year &#8212; then simply stopped. It&#8217;s now been nearly twenty years since we\u2019ve been treated to one of her animal tales, and why she left writing remained a mystery of children&#8217;s literature. Until now, that is. We had an opportunity to ask her about her departure from writing. And her answer is pretty unequivocal: It was simply <em>time<\/em> to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;d written full time for thirty years and part time for another four,\u201d she told us.\u00a0\u201cI had 82 published books and several who didn&#8217;t make it into print.\u00a0I&#8217;d reached the point where editors were saying, \u2018Ho hum, here comes another\u00a0Lynn\u00a0Hall\u00a0book.\u2019 Critics and reviewers were saying, \u2018Ho hum, here comes another\u00a0Lynn Hall\u00a0book.\u2019\u00a0<em>I<\/em>\u00a0was saying \u2018Ho hum, here comes another\u00a0Lynn\u00a0Hall\u00a0book.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Leaving.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-783 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Leaving.jpg\" alt=\"Leaving\" width=\"303\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Leaving.jpg 303w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Leaving-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hall acknowledges she didn\u2019t feel typecast or uncomfortably boxed-in as an author. \u201cWalter Farley once told me that he was so typecast to Black Stallion books that when he tried to write a dog story, <em>The Great Dane Thor<\/em>, it didn&#8217;t sell at all, and toward the end of his career he had to include \u2018Black Stallion\u2019 in the titles of books that had nothing to do with the black stallion.\u00a0He really was typecast, and he hated it.\u201d But no typecasting plagued her, she asserts. She wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/T2eC16NHJF8E9nnC6IU+BRJqRnuf60_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-784 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/T2eC16NHJF8E9nnC6IU+BRJqRnuf60_1.jpg\" alt=\"$T2eC16NHJF8E9nnC6IU+BRJq(Rnuf!~~60_1\" width=\"311\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/T2eC16NHJF8E9nnC6IU+BRJqRnuf60_1.jpg 311w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/T2eC16NHJF8E9nnC6IU+BRJqRnuf60_1-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a>many different types of \u201cLynn Hall\u201d books, as she calls them, over the years (dog stories, horse stories, achingly real tales of personal growth, mystery tales \u2013 all for different ages), \u201cso if I was boxed in, it was a pretty roomy box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her creativity simply ran dry: \u201c{A}fter so many books, it had become impossible to keep coming up with fresh new ideas, plots, characters.\u00a0I found I was repeating myself.\u00a0And when I tried writing edgier, more timely books, my editor rejected them saying they didn&#8217;t sound like\u00a0Lynn\u00a0Hall\u00a0books.\u201d But, she\u2019s quick to add, she doesn\u2019t necessarily feel she was born to be a writer, as many authors assert. \u201c{I}t was more a matter of looking for a way to live according to my nature, than an overwhelming urge to write.\u00a0I knew\u2026I didn&#8217;t want to be married, I didn&#8217;t want to spend my life working in an office, I wanted to be my own boss and to live in the country.\u00a0After trying a few other things that didn&#8217;t work, like breeding chinchillas and painting animal portraits, I stumbled onto writing children&#8217;s books, it was a perfect fit, and I ran with it.\u00a0 I&#8217;d seen a horse story in a bookstore window, written by a local author, and when I leafed through it I could see that the writer knew nothing about horses.\u00a0I suddenly knew that this was something I could do, and do well.\u00a0Simple as that. Probably if I&#8217;d been a more normal writer, who grew up loving writing, it would have been harder for me to retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, there\u2019s a lot to be said for retiring at the top of one\u2019s game.<a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/GeorgessMcHargue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-786 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/GeorgessMcHargue.png\" alt=\"GeorgessMcHargue\" width=\"175\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Georgess McHargue, pictured right, wrote over twenty titles for children and adults in the sixties and seventies, mostly folklore and fantasy tales, such as the beloved <em>Stoneflight <\/em>(1975), the story of a young girl named Janie who uses her power to animate the stone animals that adorn New York City\u2019s buildings, all in an effort to find escape from her parents\u2019 quarreling. McHargue was nominated for a National Book Award for her first book, <em>The Beasts of Never<\/em> (1968), as well as\u00a0<em>The Impossible People: A History Natural and Unnatural of Beings Terrible and Wonderful <\/em>(1972), illustrated by Frank Bozzo. The latter examined the origins and evolution of various mythological beings in European and American folklore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/61MHDAMQudL-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-789 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/61MHDAMQudL-1.jpg\" alt=\"61MHDAMQudL (1)\" width=\"384\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/61MHDAMQudL-1.jpg 384w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/61MHDAMQudL-1-230x300.jpg 230w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/61MHDAMQudL-1-332x432.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was an author whose career was doing great. And then she seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became obsessed with the lives of women rulers (dozens of them),\u201d she told us in 2010, \u201cthat no publisher would support, so {I} started my own nonprofit to remedy the omission and actually published one book in an intended series that fizzled, to put it kindly.\u201d She also served briefly as the CEO of a million-dollar archaeological company.<\/p>\n<p>Did she regret leaving the field of children\u2019s books?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo tell the truth it\u2019s like an arrow in my gut to hear that people wonder where I went,\u201d she told us, shortly before her death in the summer of 2011. (Her obituary can be read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegrotonline.com\/2011\/07\/26\/obituary-georgess-mchargue\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>One could argue that perhaps author\/illustrator Robert McCloskey, though he led a highly-acclaimed, award-winning career, had some more books in him. He wrote and illustrated eight, created the illustrations for ten more, and brought readers many beloved titles that will stand the test of time, but he chose to stop illustrating in 1970 with <em>Henry Reed\u2019s Big Show<\/em>, 33\u00a0years before his death.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bookscouting11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-793 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bookscouting11.jpg\" alt=\"bookscouting11\" width=\"408\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bookscouting11.jpg 408w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bookscouting11-201x300.jpg 201w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bookscouting11-332x494.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gary Schmidt addresses this early departure from children\u2019s literature in his biography of the artist, noting that, after the publication of <em>Time of Wonder<\/em><em>,<\/em> McCloskey\u2019s editor, May Massee, had asked him to illustrate Keith Robertson&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Henry Reed, Inc.,<\/em> published in 1958. McCloskey then went on to illustrate three more Henry Reed books, ending with <em>Henry Reed\u2019s Big Show <\/em>in 1970.\u00a0By that time, Schmidt writes, \u201cViking had merged\u00a0into a corporation, and McCloskey was becoming dissatisfied with the look of the\u00a0books.\u201d Adds Schmidt,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since Make Way for Ducklings, each of McCloskey&#8217;s picture books had won a Caldecott Medal or Caldecott\u00a0Honor;\u00a0Burt Dow won neither.\u00a0The Caldecott winner for 1963, the year Burt Dow was published, is significant in that it suggests that new trends were taking hold of children&#8217;s literature in the early\u00a01960s:\u00a0 Maurice Sendak&#8217;s Where the Wild Things Are.\u00a0Where McCloskey had always pictured childhood as a time of exuberant joy and wonder, Sendak pictured it was a dangerous period, where the child was prey to destructive impulses, internal fears, and almost uncontrollable frustrations.\u00a0Where McCloskey depicted the unity, strength, and love that comes from family, Sendak was to depict the child&#8217;s alienation from the adult world.\u00a0The two visions could not have been more different, and for at least the next two decades it would be Maurice Sendak&#8217;s vision that would dominate children&#8217;s literature.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Waterman_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-797 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Waterman_1-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"Waterman_1\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Waterman_1-233x300.jpg 233w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Waterman_1-332x426.jpg 332w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Waterman_1.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_book_cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-796\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_book_cover.jpg\" alt=\"Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_(book)_cover\" width=\"507\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_book_cover.jpg 400w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_book_cover-300x266.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_book_cover-332x294.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1979, when asked about his future plans, McCloskey noted that he felt he had thoroughly explored the realm of picture books and that he was interested in film and television puppet shows. According to his daughters, he indeed took up puppeteering at this time and also continued to paint \u2013 not paintings for children\u2019s book illustrations, but paintings of his family, his travels, Maine scenes, and images of birds and other animals, the type of paintings he had done in between children\u2019s book projects during his career.
