The three stories below are just a few of many stories we had that worked for either one (or, in some cases, both) of those chapters &#8212; but were cut from the book (as all the stories at this site were).<\/p>\n<p>They are stories about squeamishness. Indecent exposures. Or, simply, editors and readers not seeing eye to eye with their authors and illustrators on what is or is not acceptable for children to see &#8212; <em>or<\/em> what they think children will understand. Leo Lionni\u2019s editor for\u00a0<em>A Busy Year,<\/em> for instance,\u00a0asked him to remove the word \u201cmanure,\u201d as the publisher felt that children wouldn\u2019t be familiar with the word. Lionni refused. \u201cHe told me they should look it up,\u201d his granddaughter Annie told us.<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0in this post\u00a0Sergio Ruzzier gets the best line of all. We were mighty tempted to type something like <em>The Saga of the Unobtrusive Penis<\/em> as our post&#8217;s title today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0* \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n<p>Author\/illustra<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-582 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tumblr_m21mqc68nA1qiosrv-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"tumblr_m21mqc68nA1qiosrv\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tumblr_m21mqc68nA1qiosrv-233x300.jpg 233w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tumblr_m21mqc68nA1qiosrv-332x427.jpg 332w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tumblr_m21mqc68nA1qiosrv.jpg 369w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/>tor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmanders.com\/\">John Manders\u2019<\/a> 2004 illustrated title, <a href=\"Marsha%20Diane Arnold\">Marsha Diane Arnold&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<em style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; line-height: normal;\">Prancing, Dancing Lily<\/em>, is\u00a0about a toe-tapping cow, who leaves the barn to explore the world of dance styles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing you should understand about cows: they have udders,\u201d John tells us. \u201cBig, bulbous, jiggly, pendulous body parts located somewhere in the cow\u2019s nether regions. When you stand a cow up to dance, suddenly her\u2014er, <em style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; line-height: normal;\">business<\/em> is thrust center-stage. Now, if you\u2019re a kid you\u2019ll find that hysterically funny. If you\u2019re a children\u2019s book illustrator with arrested development (like me), you too will find that hysterically funny. Unfortunately, the editor, art director, and even the author had misgivings\u00a0about having Lily\u2019s <em style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; line-height: normal;\">embonpoint<\/em> foisted upon the reading public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-579 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415.jpg\" alt=\"Lily.sk.1415\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1863\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415.jpg 2940w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415-300x190.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415-1024x648.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415-700x443.jpg 700w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.sk_.1415-332x210.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2940px) 100vw, 2940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After seeing initial sketches, the editing team asked John to tone down the teats, which he didn\u2019t do nearly enough, and he eventually had to re-work even his final paintings, reducing the udders to \u201cthe size of a smallish ping pong ball\u2026 So I made the changes. No use crying over it. Before I did, though, I got the original funny version of the Rockettes scene photographed and made a dandy Christmas card out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-578 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes.jpg\" alt=\"Lily.rockettes\" width=\"1224\" height=\"792\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes.jpg 1224w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes-300x194.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes-1024x662.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes-700x452.jpg 700w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Lily.rockettes-332x214.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1224px) 100vw, 1224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All&#8217;s well that ends well, though: &#8220;<em>Prancing, Dancing Lily<\/em> by my pal Marsha,&#8221; John says, &#8220;is now <a href=\"http:\/\/fatredcouch.com\/Prancing_Dancing_Lilly\">available as an app<\/a>.\u00a0Yes, for the app, Marsha generously allowed me to re-paint Lily&#8217;s lady-bits back to their original glory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cover_of_Novel_Secrets_At_Sea_2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-583 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cover_of_Novel_Secrets_At_Sea_2011.jpg\" alt=\"Cover_of_Novel_Secrets_At_Sea,_2011\" width=\"300\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cover_of_Novel_Secrets_At_Sea_2011.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cover_of_Novel_Secrets_At_Sea_2011-197x300.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Illustrator Kelly Murphy recalls her own close call with indecent exposure when working on the interior illustrations for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Peck_(writer)\">Richard Peck\u2019s<\/a> 2011 children\u2019s novel, <em>Secrets at Sea<\/em>. In the book, two mice sisters are at a grand ball on a steamship liner, headed for England. In order to successfully guide their human counterparts through the complicated maze of royal etiquette, they hitch a ride on their clothing. One of the mice, Beatrice, hangs on to the matriarch of the family, who is in danger of being rebuked by a not-so-friendly attendant of the Queen of England\u2019s sister. As this attendant is about to scream at this heavyset woman, Beatrice emerges from her bosom and the perturbed attendant faints.<\/p>\n<p>As the illustrator, Murphy was directed to depict this image: \u201cRichard is insistent on this image above all others, fyi,\u201d the publisher told her. \u201cAnd of course,\u201d Kelly\u00a0adds, \u201cRichard does an impeccable job of describing the scene with sass and humor. So, I went to the drawing board. It turned out that my first version showed a bit too much of Mrs. Cranston. I kept remembering Richard\u2019s description of her shoulders being bare and looking like some kind of ham&#8230; so I ran with it. I had to bring the neckline up a tad high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-585 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea15.jpg\" alt=\"secrets at sea15\" width=\"520\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea15.jpg 520w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea15-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea15-332x413.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Kelly\u2019s next version, she had made the fabric too stretchy between each breast. \u201cWe\u2019d also like to reduce the shading a tiny bit at\u00a0the center of her cleavage; we worry it makes the dress looks slightly too sheer,\u201d the publisher told her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-586 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16.jpg\" alt=\"secrets at sea16\" width=\"717\" height=\"1008\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16.jpg 717w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16-213x300.jpg 213w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16-700x984.jpg 700w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea16-332x466.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically, I am on top of these kinds of things,&#8221; Kelly tells us, &#8220;so I laughed with each revision. No word was made about the poor mouse\u2026crushed between these two mountains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the final illustration?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea-final.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-584 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea-final.jpg\" alt=\"secrets at sea final\" width=\"396\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea-final.jpg 396w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea-final-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/secrets-at-sea-final-332x498.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back on these,\u201d Kelly jokes, \u201cit was a matter of millimeters that could have plummeted this image int<a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/guysread.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-596 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/guysread-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"guysread\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/guysread-197x300.jpg 197w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/guysread.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a>o the realm of smut. I think this all would have been more interesting if it was the mouse who has cleavage!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruzzier.com\/\">Sergio Ruzzier\u2019s<\/a> contribution to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsworldwide.com\/\">Jon Scieszka\u2019s<\/a> <em style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; line-height: normal;\">Guys Write for Guys Read<\/em>, he submitted a drawing, which he created in elementary school, of a monster with his penis in plain sight. To his surprise, the publisher didn\u2019t censor it, though it did anger an Amazon customer reviewer or two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read an Amazon customer review,\u201d Sergio told us, \u201cby a seventh-grade teacher who wrote, <em>\u2018there\u2019s one illustration in the book that shows recognizable male genitalia on a monster drawn when the artist was in fifth grade\u2026 Unfortunately, I\u2019m going to have to take a Sharpie to that portion of the illustration.
