The story? &#8220;The plot revolves around a cow named Elsie Bovary who teams up with a Jewish pig named Shalom and Tom\u2014a turkey with an iPhone\u2014to travel the world and bring peace to the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Let us, for just one moment, put aside our feelings about children&#8217;s books by celebrities and consider the book on its own merits.\u00a0 If anyone wrote a book with that plot summary, how would we feel about it? \u00a0We rather enjoyed Angie Manfredi&#8217;s comment on Twitter: &#8220;this is literally like a combination of random, nonsense words strung together in gibberish. IPHONE TURKEY GOD BOX TORAH CHANGE.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Wild Things: Acts of Mischief in Children&#8217;s Literature,<\/em> we devote an entire chapter to the phenomenon of the celebrity children&#8217;s book. You can then imagine our regret that Duchovny didn&#8217;t announce his book a couple years earlier. What a fabulous inclusion it would have made!\u00a0 In lieu of that, we recommend you read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/david-duchovny-wrote-kids-book-about-cow-who-bring-206807\" target=\"_blank\">the comments<\/a> on the AV Club&#8217;s piece on the book. But rather than just rail against them, he found a more useful outlet for his rage. Recently, the good folks at \u00a0the\u00a0<em>Horn Book<\/em> were kind enough to make available online Peter&#8217;s old piece, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbook.com\/2014\/06\/choosing-books\/horn-book-magazine\/stars-guide-writing-children-page1\/#_\" target=\"_blank\">The Star&#8217;s Guide to Writing for Children<\/a>&#8221; (originally published in print in 2004) &#8212; just so that we could point you to it\u00a0again.<\/p>\n<p>Since we finished the book, there have been a slew of additional celebrity picture books.\u00a0 Who can forget (read: who can remember) Ricky Martin&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/09\/17\/ricky-martin-childrens-book_n_3942355.html\" target=\"_blank\">Santiago the Dreamer in Land Among the Stars<\/a>?<\/em> (No, that title doesn&#8217;t contain a title &#8212; it&#8217;s actually written that way.) Or how about the recent CBC Children&#8217;s Book Choice Awards winner <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2014\/05\/15\/312693461\/book-news-rush-limbaugh-wins-children-s-book-author-of-the-year-award\" target=\"_blank\">Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims<\/a><\/em>?
