{"id":161,"date":"2014-07-11T04:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T09:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/?p=161"},"modified":"2014-07-08T10:01:10","modified_gmt":"2014-07-08T15:01:10","slug":"nancy-garden-on-our-minds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/?p=161","title":{"rendered":"Nancy Garden on Our Minds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/NancyGarden_COVER_SLJ0306.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-433\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/NancyGarden_COVER_SLJ0306-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"NancyGarden_COVER_SLJ0306\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/NancyGarden_COVER_SLJ0306-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/NancyGarden_COVER_SLJ0306.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>The recent passing of young adult author Nancy Garden hit us hard here at <em>Wild Things<\/em>, because in many ways Nancy was integral to significant portions of our book.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with Ms. Garden, a quick summary to catch you up to speed: \u00a0Before Young Adult was Young Adult and before books for children or teen readers with gay characters were even on the radar, Nancy Garden was breaking boundaries with her 1982 novel <em>Annie On My Mind<\/em>.\u00a0 Born in 1938, Ms. Garden worked as an agent and editor before turning her focus to writing for kids.\u00a0 She wrote picture books and novels, but <em>Annie On My Mind<\/em> is probably the book folks will remember her for best.<\/p>\n<p>If you read any of her obituaries, you will find allusions to a 1993 case where <em>Annie On My Mind<\/em> was removed from a high school&#8217;s library shelves and sparked a First Amendment federal court case.\u00a0 We spend a great deal of attention on this case in our book and wanted to secure permissions so as to get Nancy&#8217;s take perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/annie-on-my-mind.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-432\" src=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/annie-on-my-mind-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"annie-on-my-mind\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/annie-on-my-mind-198x300.jpg 198w, http:\/\/wildthings.blaine.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/annie-on-my-mind.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a>After getting in touch with Nancy, we found her a class act.\u00a0 She offered condolences for our departed co-writer Peter and then set about letting us know that a\u00a0statement we had for her about the banning, as we were confirming sources and nailing down page numbers, rang bells but that &#8220;I&#8217;ve said the same thing, more or less, in many a speech and I suspect in several articles as well.\u00a0 I do have copies of most of my speeches and other writings, and of course the exact wording usually changes most of the time from one to the other, so figuring out the source of the exact wording here would be an exercise in futility.&#8221; That said, she send us better wording for the book and then ended by saying of our book, &#8220;I love the title&#8211;it&#8217;s great in itself, and it&#8217;s a nice tribute to Maurice Sendak.\u00a0 May the book sell like the proverbial hot cakes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nancy was on our list of folks to send final copies of <em>Wild Things<\/em>.\u00a0 We were so sorry she didn&#8217;t get a chance to see the large section we&#8217;d dedicated to her.\u00a0 She was a remarkable woman and freedom fighter.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s watch her legacy live on.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>You can read encapsulations of Nancy&#8217;s life at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/childrens\/childrens-authors\/article\/63046-obituary-nancy-garden.html\" target=\"_blank\">Publishers Weekly<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2014\/06\/obituary\/annie-on-my-mind-author-nancy-garden-dies-at-age-76\/\" target=\"_blank\">School Library Journal<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/01\/books\/nancy-garden-dies-at-76-wrote-young-adult-novel-of-lesbians.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambdaliterary.org\/features\/rem\/06\/24\/in-remembrance-nancy-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lambda Literary<\/a> offered a tribute to her, and Roger Sutton of <em>Horn Book Magazine<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.hbook.com\/magazine\/articles\/2007\/sep07_sutton.asp\" target=\"_blank\">revisited <em>Annie On My Mind<\/em> in 2007<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recent passing of young adult author Nancy Garden hit us hard here at Wild Things, because in many ways Nancy was integral to significant portions of our book.
